CANON INFORMATION

CHARACTER NAME: Harrowhark Nonagesimus
CANON: The Locked Tomb Trilogy
HISTORY: Wiki link

STRENGTHS:

  • Studious: If there is information to be learned, she will learn it. Harrow is no stranger to late nights-turned-morning curled up with an old book. Or two. Or two dozen. She has a voracious thirst for knowledge and is more than willing to get her (metaphorical) hands dirty when she has to work out a puzzle or conduct some obscure research.

  • Dutiful: Harrowhark has a very strong sense of responsibility. Some might argue that it's because of guilt. Regardless of why, if she has been assigned a responsibility, she will not shy away from it, no matter the cost.

  • Skilled: Harrow is a master of bone necromancy, there's no understating it. She's incredibly talented in the art and is always willing to push her abilities to their very limits. She knows the ins and outs of the traditional methods of bone manipulation, but quickly picks up on the unconventional and novel too. She is familiar with the theory of other forms of necromancy but tends to look down on schools that she considers puerile.

FLAWS:

  • Arrogant: Harrow is a very strong Mage and she knows it. She assumes that she knows exactly what's going on at any given time, and is very self-assured that her way is the best way of doing things. She isn't unwilling to consider other people's ideas, of course, but only after she's tried hers first.

  • Selfish: She rarely does anything out of the goodness of her own heart. Nearly every relationship she has is based on give and take, and she'd very much like to avoid any of the 'giving' unless absolutely necessary. Everything is weighed based on what benefit it can provide to her.

  • Unsociable: A party? A meeting? Anything where Harrow has to spend more than five minutes in the company of people, or even interact with them? Yeah, Harrow's gone. She will refuse, and if she can't refuse, she will spend the entire time finding an excuse to leave early. She doesn't care if she comes across as rude and makes no effort to be pleasant.

CANON ABILITIES:

  • Bone Necromancy: Harrowhark can manipulate bone matter. She can shape it as though it were clay, and even create constructs that move as though they were creatures. She needs bone matter to begin with and cannot create it out of nothing.

  • Thanergy/Thalergy Manipulation: Thanergy (death magic) and Thalergy (life magic) are key to any necromancer's abilities. Harrowhark can sense the presence of both, and can use it to sense when creatures are around. Her control of thalergy is tenuous, but she can tap into other people's souls to empower herself. She rarely does this, and so is not very proficient at it. Her thanergy manipulation is more developed, but she usually uses it only for bone manipulation.

AU INFORMATION

AU CHARACTER NAME: (This can be the same as canon name if appropriate)
AGE: 17
GRADE: Undergraduate
AU BACKSTORY: The Ninth House is an ancient Mage family, with close ties to the First House, Second House, et cetera. They are the last of the sequence. Harrowhark Nonagesimus was born as the only daughter of her parents, after her parents had sacrificed almost every other child and ward of their House to ensure that Harrowhark would become a Mage with unthinkable power. Her parents had never kept this secret from her, though they did manufacture a cover story for the outside world, and Harrow grew up knowing the price of her magical abilities.

The duty of the Ninth House (entrusted to them by the First House) has always been to safeguard a dread and important legacy: the Locked Tomb, whose contents were prophesied to be connected to bringing about Nightfall. It was sacrilege to disturb it, and that was exactly what a 10-year-old Harrowhark did. She found within the tomb a beautiful girl, shackled by countless chains, frozen in slumber.

Her parents found out about her disobedience, and committed suicide out of shame (for the dereliction of their sacred duty) and fear (for what the opening of the Tomb might bring). They had intended for Harrow to join them as well. But she did not. Locking herself away in the depths of her family's library, Harrowhark uncovered an ancient method of bone manipulation that allowed her to puppet her parents' corpses around. She took over the running of the Ninth House, which had begun to slip in standing among the other numbered Houses due to the loss of their next generation of Mages. She became almost entirely a recluse, unwilling to let others near for fear that they would discover the secret of her parents.

However, even a recluse would hear whispers of imminent Nightfall. When the Daybreak Academy beseeched aid from the numbered Houses, Harrowhark saw this as an opportunity to repair the Ninth's standing by joining forces with the esteemed Academy. She forged her mother's signature and enrolled as a transfer student of sorts, aiming to restore the pride of her house, and to learn more about the mysterious girl in the Tomb.

Oh, and to help stop Nightfall. Probably.

AU PERSONALITY DEVIATION: Harrowhark is slightly less of a complete hermit, given that there is only so far away that anyone can be from civilization on Earth. Still, she is not very willing to engage with others of her own volition.

RACE: Human
SECRET SOCIETY: The heir and de-facto ruler of her Mage family, the Ninth House. The numbered Houses (First through Ninth) all practice different aspects of necromancy, though no one can truly resurrect the dead.

POWERS: Same as in canon. She cannot manipulate the bones of living creatures aside from herself.

HOUSING: No preference

INTERVIEW SAMPLE PROMPT

3. DESCRIBE YOUR IDEA OF AN IDEAL SCHOOL EXPERIENCE.
An environment that encourages independent study. Resources made available to those who seek them out. Information and knowledge in abundance, of course, in many different disciplines. Instructors who are masters of their craft.

6. WHAT COURSE WORK EXCITES YOU? WHY?
Study of magic is of particular interest. As a practitioner myself, I would like to expand my knowledge of the magical disciplines.

7. WHAT COURSE WORK DO YOU DETEST MOST? WHY?
I profess a mild distaste for literature. Poetry, specifically. Epic poetry, to be even more specific. I apologize, I have simply had dealings with a... trying acquaintance who had a fondness for a particular epic, and that has soured me on the subject.

8. WHAT ACTIVITIES DO YOU PARTICIPATE IN OUTSIDE YOUR EDUCATION?
My parents have involved me in the running of the household in preparation for my coming of age. It takes up much of my time but it is important work.

9. WHEN GIVEN FREE TIME, WHAT DO YOU DO WITH IT?
I... read. Magical texts, primarily.

11. WHAT DO YOU EXPECT FROM YOUR PEERS?
Competence.

12. WHEN WORKING IN A GROUP, HOW DO YOU ORGANIZE TO ACHIEVE YOUR ULTIMATE GOAL?
What others do is of little interest to me. I am aware of my abilities and will do my part--that is to say, I will do everything that hasn't already been done by someone else. How they go about the task is their business.

13. DO YOU FEEL YOU CAN RELY ON YOUR PEERS, OR DO YOU FEEL YOU MUST EXCEL ON YOUR OWN?
There is nothing left up to chance when you rely on yourself. Certainly there are many benefits to be had from cooperation and alliances. In certain cases, it may even be necessary. However, I prefer to minimize risk, and that is best achieved by relying primarily on my own abilities and competencies.

14. IN THIS EVER-CHANGING WORLD, WHAT MOST EXCITES YOU ABOUT THE FUTURE?
The potential for improvement in all forms. We are nowadays exceeding limits that had not existed a century ago. Problems once thought unsolvable are now simply banalities. With the rapid acceleration of knowledge, what will the world look like in a decade? Next year? There is potential for every day to be completely unlike the one known to us today.
(A lie. The approach of Nightfall brings with it the possibility that the girl in the Tomb will wake. What possibility for the future could be more enticing than that?)

16. WHAT MEMORIES DO YOU HOPE TO HOLD AT THE END OF YOUR JOURNEY?
Joyous ones. Who is to say what form they may take?
(A lie. It all returns to the girl in the Tomb. Always her. Her eyes must be gorgeous, thinks Harrow. As dark as gravity.)
